IKBI performed multiple elements of construction for the A-3 Test Stand at NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.
Standing more than 300 feet tall, the A-3 is an open-frame structural-steel test facility located south of the existing A-1 Test Stand. The structure was developed to support rocket engine testing under simulated high-altitude vacuum conditions while also retaining the capability to operate as a sea-level test facility.
The facility occupies a 19-acre site within Stennis Space Center’s A Complex. Supporting infrastructure includes a test control center, propellant barge docks, and access roadways. During altitude testing, steam-generation systems reduce pressure within the test cell to reproduce conditions encountered at different elevations.
The structural-steel package included more than four million pounds of steel. At the time of its construction, the A-3 was the first large test stand built at Stennis Space Center in more than four decades.
